About Vanguard

Experience That Understands the Continuum of Cardiopulmonary Care. A Vision Designed to Strengthen It.

Vanguard Cardiopulmonary Education & Consulting LLC was founded to bridge clinical experience with education, program development, wellness, and prevention through mobile education and consulting. Vanguard provides practical, evidence-informed support designed to strengthen cardiopulmonary programs, empower healthcare professionals, improve patient and community education, and help organizations build meaningful pathways toward better health outcomes.

Experience Across the Continuum of Care

Vanguard's founder brings 18 years of experience across inpatient and outpatient cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and wellness coordination, with hands-on experience supporting patients throughout the continuum of recovery, from high acuity hospitalization and the early stages following complex cardiac and pulmonary procedures to structured rehabilitation, long term wellness, and prevention. Her experience includes working closely with individuals affected by heart failure, heart transplantation, complex cardiothoracic surgery, and other high risk cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions, while collaborating with physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to support recovery, education, and continuity of care.

Leadership, Program Development & Wellness

Education, Credentials & Professional Foundation

Elizabeth Torres ┃Founder & Principal Consultant

Leadership across cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and wellness has been a defining part of her career. As a Wellness Coordinator and Exercise Physiologist, she developed and strengthened cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and wellness programs, managed program operations and performance tracking, mentored clinical team members, and helped develop evidence- based exercise prescription protocols as part of departmental certification and quality improvement efforts. She has also led outreach, education, and patient engagement initiatives, contributing to a 70% increase in program participation. This combination of clinical experience, program development, wellness leadership, and operational insight continues to shape Vanguard’s practical, evidence-informed, and outcomes-focused approach to education and consulting.

Elizabeth Torres brings a professional foundation built on exercise science, advanced cardiopulmonary training, and nearly two decades of hands-on clinical experience. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Montclair State University, with a concentration in Adult Fitness, establishing the academic foundation for a career devoted to exercise physiology, cardiovascular and pulmonary health, rehabilitation, wellness, and prevention.

Her professional preparation includes ACLS, CPR/AED, cardiac dysrhythmia interpretation, and LifeVest education, along with extensive training and competency in the rehabilitation of medically complex cardiovascular patients. Through her Phase I inpatient cardiac rehabilitation experience, she completed required clinical competencies involving advanced cardiac support technologies, including ventricular assist devices (VADs) across adult and pediatric populations, BiVAD support, CentriMag, ECMO, TandemHeart, and Impella. This preparation included understanding the clinical purpose and fundamental concepts of these technologies, recognizing relevant physiologic and device-related considerations, and applying that knowledge while safely mobilizing and providing Phase I rehabilitation to patients as part of the interdisciplinary care team.

Her pulmonary rehabilitation experience includes working with diverse and medically complex populations, including individuals with COPD, asthma, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, bronchiectasis, sarcoidosis, cystic fibrosis, thoracic and VATS procedures, lung cancer and other lung surgeries, and patients preparing for or recovering from lung transplantation. She has provided rehabilitation across varying levels of respiratory impairment and support, including patients breathing on room air, requiring supplemental oxygen, utilizing noninvasive ventilatory support such as BiPAP, as well as appropriate patients recovering from mechanical ventilation and critical illness. Pulmonary rehabilitation required careful assessment of oxygen saturation, respiratory symptoms, perceived exertion, physiologic responses to activity, functional tolerance, and changing oxygenation needs during exercise. Her experience includes individualized exercise progression and monitoring of patients requiring supplemental oxygen during activity, as well as supporting progression toward reduced oxygen requirements or room-air activity when clinically appropriate and consistent with medical direction and established protocols. This experience has provided a strong understanding of the individualized physiologic, respiratory, and safety considerations involved in rehabilitating medically complex pulmonary patients.

Her experience also encompasses clinical monitoring, telemetry and ECG interpretation, cardiopulmonary exercise and metabolic testing, pulmonary function testing, patient and caregiver education, and the development and implementation of individualized exercise plans within appropriate clinical and rehabilitation settings. Together, this extensive clinical, educational, and wellness foundation provides the knowledge, perspective, and practical expertise that drive Vanguard’s approach to cardiopulmonary education, consulting, prevention, wellness, and program development.

The Purpose Behind Vanguard

Born From Experience. Driven by Prevention. Built to Change Outcomes.

Vanguard was born from more than a career; it was shaped by nearly two decades on the front lines of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and by a deeply personal understanding of how cardiovascular disease can change a family forever. Elizabeth Torres’ journey into Exercise Science began while watching her mother experience recurrent TIAs related to hypertension and recognizing a broader pattern of cardiovascular disease within her own family. The devastating loss of her brother to an aortic dissection gave that journey an even deeper purpose. What began as a determination to understand the heart, lungs, and the power of prevention became a lifelong commitment to supporting people throughout recovery, helping families understand, and helping healthcare professionals build stronger pathways toward better outcomes. Vanguard is the realization of that commitment. A mission to turn experience into education, education into prevention, and collaboration into meaningful change.

Across nearly two decades of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, Elizabeth observed a recurring opportunity to strengthen the connection between exceptional medical and surgical care and the education, prevention, rehabilitation awareness, referral pathways, and long term support that help patients continue progressing after hospitalization. Many patients entered rehabilitation still needing a deeper understanding of their condition, risk factors, the purpose behind their exercise therapy, and the actions that could help protect their health beyond the program. She also recognized an opportunity to expand awareness of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and the specialized contributions Exercise Physiologists bring to recovery, prevention, and long term wellness. Vanguard was created to help strengthen those connections, bringing healthcare professionals, organizations, patients, communities, and strategic partners together around stronger education, stronger programs, and a more connected approach to cardiopulmonary health. Furthermore, Vanguard helps extend the impact of clinical care through education, collaboration, and prevention, supporting healthier transitions, stronger engagement, and better long term outcomes.

Education can change behavior. Prevention can improve outcomes. Collaboration can strengthen care.
